We are on a plane flying to one of our favourite places in the World. The Azores Islands. This trip is a birthday present to Raquel. Faial Island. One of the 9 islands of the Azores.

SHE SAID YES!
We are on a plane flying to one of our favourite places in the World. The Azores Islands. This trip is a birthday present to Raquel. Faial Island. One of the 9 islands of the Azores.
It’s our third island in this small piece of paradise on earth. The trip was a surprise present, but it’s not the only surprise I have. I also have a ring. A very simple ring. It’s a silver shell inspired by the sea. The value of the ring is nearly nothing but that’s exactly how I wanted it to be. The real value would come after this trip.

After driving around the island and seeing all of it’s natural beauty, we arrive at Capelinhos Volcano. It’s the end of the afternoon. Light is gold and beautiful. This piece of land was formed only 61 years ago. It’s perfect. This is it. There is not a single person in sight. The Volcano is behind us. Light is even better. I take the ring out of my pocket and give it to Raquel. She is completely surprised. Yes. She says yes. <3

THE FILM
When I decided I was proposing to Raquel during this trip, I knew I wanted to capture footage in some way. Not because I wanted to show other people but for ourselves. For our own memories.Our work and style is usually very clean and calm. But that’s not what I wanted for this. I wanted something grainy and not polished and fun to film. This was not a production. It was an important moment in our lives and I wanted to capture it just like it was. With laughs, mistakes, imperfections, sadness, happiness… All of what makes life real.

I brought a Super 8mm camera and 1 roll of film. 3 minutes and 30 seconds of footage. Editing was easy. All of the footage was dear to us. Some looked exactly like we wanted. Some was dark and blue. Some was golden and faithful. It didn’t matter. It’s for us. We love it exactly like it is. In the end we just adjusted a few shots and used every single frame we captured during those days.Each frame has it’s own story. And those frames together with our memories make this film very dear to us. It’s the film from the time I asked Raquel to marry me and she said YES.

ELA DISSE SIM!
Estamos no avião com destino a um dos nossos lugares preferidos no mundo. Os Açores. Esta viagem é um presente de aniversário para a Raquel. Quando chegámos ao aeroporto, eu finalmente contei-lhe qual era o destino. Ilha do Faial. Uma das 9 ilhas dos Açores. É a terceira ilha que conhecemos neste pequeno paraíso na Terra. Esta viagem é uma surpresa para o aniversário, mas não foi a única surpresa. Tenho ainda um anel. Um anel muito simples. É um búzio prateado, uma inspiração vinda do mar. O valor material daquele anel é insignificante mas é exactamente como eu quero que seja. O real valor ira nascer com esta viagem.

Depois de viajar de carro pela ilha do Faial e apreciar a beleza natural deste lugar, chegámos ao vulcão dos Capelinhos. É fim de tarde. A luz é dourada e linda. Este pedaço de terra recente foi formado há apenas 61 anos. É perfeito. É isto. Não há uma única pessoa à vista. O vulcão está nas nossas costa. A luz está ainda mais bonita. Tiro o anel do meu bolso e entrego-o à Raquel. Ela fica completamente surpreendida. Sim. Ela diz sim <3

O FILME
Quando decidi pedir a Raquel em casamento nesta viagem, eu sabia que iria querer ter imagens deste momento. Não porque queria mostrar estas imagens a outras pessoas mas porque queria guarda-las para nós. Para as nossas próprias memórias.O nosso trabalho e estilo é muito limpo e calmo. Mas não era isso que queria para este momento. Queria algo com grão e nada polido. E queria algo que nos fizesse divertir enquanto filmávamos. Isto não era trabalho ou uma produção. Isto é um momento importante nas nossas vidas e eu queria captá-lo tal como aconteceu. Com sorrisos, erros, imperfeições, alegrias e tristezas… Tudo o que faz parte da nossa vida real.

Trouxe connosco uma câmara super 8 e um rolo de película. No final teria imagens com cerca de 3 minutos e 30 segundos. A edição é fácil. Toda a imagem captada é importante para nós. Alguma ficou exactamente como tínhamos imaginado. Um pouco escuro e azul. Ou dourado e fiel. Não importa. É para nós. E adoramos tal como está. No fim só ajustámos uns planos aqui e ali mas usámos todos os planos que captámos nesses dias no Faial.Cada frame tem a sua própria história. E esses frames todos juntos com nossas memórias fazem este filme tão importante para nós. É um filme do tempo em que pedi a Raquel em casamento e ela disse sim.
